Hampton Roads is home to one of the highest concentrations of military bases in the country. Here is a breakdown of the major installations and what to expect if you're stationed there.
Naval Station Norfolk (NOB)
The world's largest naval station. Home to dozens of ships and aircraft squadrons. Traffic on Hampton Blvd and I-564 gets heavy during quarters — plan your commute accordingly. Popular housing areas include Norfolk's Ghent, Larchmont, Ocean View, and Virginia Beach's Bayside and Great Neck.

The Navy's East Coast Master Jet Base in Virginia Beach. You will hear jet noise ('the sound of freedom'). Excellent location for coastal lifestyle living. Popular nearby areas include Great Neck, Princess Anne, and Red Mill.

JEB Little Creek-Fort StoryNavy / Army
At the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Home to the Navy SEALs and East Coast amphibious forces. Very accessible from the northern Virginia Beach neighborhoods of Chic's Beach, Alanton, and Cape Henry.

NSA Hampton RoadsNavy
A large support installation covering multiple sites in the Norfolk area. Personnel often live in western Norfolk, Portsmouth, or Chesapeake to avoid tunnel congestion.
Coast Guard Base PortsmouthCoast Guard
Located across the Elizabeth River from Norfolk. Personnel commonly live in Portsmouth, Chesapeake, or Suffolk to minimize tunnel commutes. The Churchland and Western Branch areas of Portsmouth/Chesapeake are popular.
